"Mystic Creatures" 2014: Topiary Art Meets Imagination
June 1 - August 31 2014

9 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily, Garden Grounds

Garvan Woodland Gardens is pleased to present Mystic Creatures, a 2014 summer extravaganza showcasing the newest trends in the ancient and celebrated art of topiary.

Remember those childhood fantasies of magical journeys to amazing lands full of mythic beasts and strange companions? This summer, enter just such an enchanted world of Mystic Creatures during the Gardens' biggest and most exciting summer exhibit ever. Three major topiary pieces will be on display at the Floating Cloud Bridge, Promenade, and Pavilion areas. A fourth will be moving around from time to time, so you'll have to look and see where he's hiding on each visit.

Mystic Creatures is a cooperative project of the Gardens in-house design and fabrication teams and the Landscape Architecture Department in the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. Designs were developed by garden landscape architects and U of A students, who studied design, plant materials, and structural systems required to create living sculptures.

The resulting displays are currently under construction by the same highly skilled artisans who create the Gardens' new features for Holiday Lights. At up to 13 feet tall and covered in almost 20,000 plants, these living sculptures are by far the most ambitious of their kind to ever appear in the Mid-South.

Not really topiaries at all, Mystic Creatures are living sculptures based on a modern technique called mosaiculture. This art form combines centuries-old formal European parterres of clipped shrubs and annuals with the vertical character, size, and three dimensional form of traditional topiary figures. The resulting pieces feature carefully manicured plants covering structural steel frames that tower over visitors, wind through lawns and plantings, and 'walk' through the forest.

Let the Fairy Gourdmother welcome you to this magical menagerie populated by a Magical Sea Serpent, the 'Shroom Family, a Fairy Village, and even Sasquatch, who'll be hiding to see if you can find him. It's a wonderful way to relive memories and make some new ones with the family.

Members free, $10 adults, $5 ages 6-12, free ages 0-5
