Behind the Shoji Art Show and Sale

July 28–September 3, Garden hours
Pavilion Gallery
Included with Garden admission
Inspired by Japanese culture and infused with Portland's vibrance, the 9th annual Behind the Shoji Art Show and Sale opens at the Garden on July 28. Featuring handmade works by 37 artists, the show presents the best in contemporary art and crafts of the Pacific Northwest and echoes the balance, simplicity, elegance, and attention to detail found in the Garden itself.
Collectors will discover new works by longtime favorites, including sculptor Jan Rentenaar's popular ceramics, which evoke ancient legends and storytelling, and Wataru Sugiyama's playful sculptures in stone, bronze, wood and ceramic. In addition to sculpture, the show will feature ceramics, textiles, printmaking, and other mediums that reflect craft traditions of Japan.
We are pleased to welcome 12 new artists to the show this year. Among them are Kelly Wu, whose magnolia and lotus pods seem to glow from within, and Lilith Rockett, whose porcelain tableware is the essence of refinement. In harmony with the Garden's beautiful setting, many of the decorative arts presented this year will incorporate imagery from nature.
Wearable art—including purses, scarves, and jewelry—enhances the wide selection of one-of-a-kind objects in Behind the Shoji.
