Japanese Garden Web Showcase:

Japanese Gardens Online

The best Japanese Garden websites will be featured in this section; chosen for excellent technique, great gardens, and new ideas. Web Showcase Site #5 was submitted by Jake Hobson, author of "Niwaki, Training and Shaping Trees the Japanese Way."

Andrew Deane, a teacher in Tokyo, has set about compiling an 'online handbook' of Japanese Gardens - but japanesegardensonline.com is more than that. Andrew describes, through western eyes, the process of constructing his own garden: a genuine modern day, family garden in a suburb of Tokyo, built by professionals.

Find more information and link to this site here: Web Showcase #5

Featured Project:

Marc Peter Keane begins Tiger Glen Garden at the Johnson Museum of Art in Ithaca, New York. The garden is based on a painterly theme called "The Three Laughers of the Tiger Glen", an ancient Chinese parable that reflects on the idea that a narrow adherance to any one philosophy is contrary to true wisdom. From July to September, 2011, Mr. Keane will share images and comments about the process of building the garden HERE.

Oribe Lantern    織部灯籠
This is a type of lantern designed specifically for garden use by Lord Furuta Oribe, a famous tea master and a practitioner of the Sukiya. It has no foundation stone, but sits on a square pedestal planted into the ground for stability. This is the characteristic of the “buried base” group of stone lanterns known as “ikekomi”.

For more info on the Oribe and other stone lanterns, see Japanese Stone Lanterns.
